We had this problem with a Trilog ColorPlot-100 (Printronix, basically), and it turned out that the printer, in addition to generating DC3, was dropping DTR! We hot-wired DTR constant-on. We also had to have a logic board swap before ALL the flow control problems were fixed (maybe they gave you our old board!).
