Emigh) Distribution: world Organization: Genetics, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC Lines: 23 We have a 3B2/400 running SystemV Revision 3.0. We have always been tight of i-nodes, running about 1500 free i-nodes in the /usr partition (which also includes /usr/spool). A couple of times we have run out of i-nodes and have had to go through the partition deleting stuff. We also have repartitioned the disks a couple of times. This week we had a power failure. In bringing up the system after the failure, fsck was run and various magical fixes were applied to the system. After we were up, I ran df and noticed that the number of free i-nodes was now 7400! I assumed that fsck had deleted some files or something, so I went back to our latest backup (about 5 days ago). The only files that I could see that were deleted were news article that would have expired normally in that time. Now, I'm not complaining -- who couldn't use an "extra" 5900 i-nodes, but I am puzzled as to where they were found -- or worse, what we may have lost to get them. By the way, the filesystem has 18656 i-nodes to start with, so 5900 extra is a significant amount. --Ted-- -- Ted H. Emigh, Dept.
