PostScript may be a trademark, and the cost of having them develop and implementation for you may be $100,000, but neither of these facts stop you from going out and developing your own implementation. That's what Sun did. That's what some folks at Berkeley did. All it takes is careful reading of the Red Book and lots of hacking.
