I hope it uses the KIOCCMD "ioctl" with the KBD_CMD_BELL and KBD_CMD_NOBELL commands; the "/dev/bell" hack is not the correct way to ring the bell, it is not the official way to ring the bell, and there is no guarantee that it will not work in future releases or with future hardware.
