As an example of a result of this - my mother-in-law just got "requested" to take immediate not-early-but-not-yet-intended retirement. (She didn't have to, but that would have meant they would have laid off a youger person supporting a family...) She was a proof-reader for a printing company that mostly deals in printing stock options, merger proposals, and similar legal instruments. The work available for their company has just about disappeared since the tumble.
