"char" is an abbreviation for "character", so it should of course be
pronounced the way you pronounce the first syllable of that word.

But:  Does your company also waste a great deal of time arguing over
whether "either" is pronounced EYEther or EEther, too?  This debate is
very much the same sort of thing.
