If you stick to "bang" paths everything sort of works, but isn't the reason for using smail specifically to *allow* you to use RFC822 style mail? In my book, elm + smail + John Zeeff's lmail.c which allows mail to be sent to a program is a *very good* replacement for mailx + /bin/mail. Plus, it works well with RFC822.
