Does your VAX have a floating point accelerator on it.  The system manager
at our site indicated that when he was at Tektronics he had an FPA go
bad with the only symptom being that it returned the wrong answer. 
Of course, it passed all the diagnostics which obviously did not include
a routine to see if if was getting the right answers.  This should be
straight forward to check out by removing the FPA and trying your test
program again.
