RFC 992 discusses Internet Numbers. There are other RFCs such as RFC 950 dealing with subnetting, and RFC 882 and RFC 883 dealing with Domain names which may prove to be very useful. Aside from that there is a DDN Protocol handbook call 1(800)235-3155 for ordering info. This handbook contains background info as well numerous RFCs.
