Sure you can subscribe to APPLE2-L from USENET.  If I can send mail
to you, then you can send mail back to bitnet (check the routing
in however the "From" arrives in my mail to you).  If you can send
mail to bitnet then you can send mail to the LISTSERV at BROWNVM.
The address is probably going to look like:

...ihnp4!psuvax1!brownvm.bitnet!listserv

Sadly, LISTSERV does not seem to be able to untangle UUCP (USENET)
addresses well enough to return requests for files, but you can
subscribe to the list and receive programs as they are posted (some
of the files are 40K or so; you may have to make sure you keep up
with the incoming or risk overflowing your receiving space).
