The solution is Softerm II. It has options for uploading and downloading
that allow one to remove up to four different characters at a time.

If the characters are alredy in the file then you can use Softerm
in the local mode where the file is taken from one disk file, run
through the filter and written back to another file.

If the above isn't enough, Softerm can also convert betwen DOS 3.3
and ProDOS at the same time.
