The result is that the operating system is confused and doesn't know what to do. Use Diskdoctor or SECED to check (I believe) bytes 7,8,9 of the boot sector of your disks (where the serial number is). If those bytes are zero or the same value over several disks then you must change them. This problem shows up from time to time because the early version of twister did not set serial numbers ramdomly.
