A foreign visitor of our institute is showing interest in obtaining a PC with wich he can produce mathematical documents. Currently he thinks about buying the following: - Commodore PC 40, with 40 MB hard disk. - HP LaserJet II - WordStar As I mentioned in the 'Subject', he wants to use TeX. This is a major point. As a mathematician, he really wants all the possibilities that TeX can give him. So which TeX should he use? Which macro libraries (like LaTeX) are available? Second question: which printer can be used, given that a driver for that printer is available. Is it perhaps better to obtain a printer that can read PostScript? (Like the QMS-80?) There are some limitations in all this: - The budget is US$ 15.000 and nothing more. - In the area where he lives not all the brands of machines are supported, so for instance Macintoshes and LaserWriters are not a good choice for that reason. - The system will be used by a mathematician, not a hw/sw expert. - He will be the only user of such hw/sw, so support of any kind by anyone is unlikely. Please respond to these questions via e-mail (frankk%cwi.nl@uunet.uu.net). As our guest is leaving again very soon, I'd appreciate a prompt reply. In your respones, please also name company and address of the products you prefer. Thanks very much for any response. -- Frank Kuiper, CWI, Amsterdam. ___ Internet: frankk@cwi.nl, frankk%cwi.nl@uunet.uu.net _][__| | AppleLink: HOL0042 <_______|-1 Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.
