Besides, this may be useful to all...] I too had this problem, and it's that for some reason the physical ID/boot blocks on the HD40 get occasionally trashed. Use the Apple HD Utility (I don't recall it's exact name, but it came on the disks), V1.4 (a new one), and hit the UPDATE button, which will re-write the boot blocks and driver, but will NOT bother any data on the disk.
