I finally figured out what the "lnext" character is for (besides
creating random files named ^?, that is.)  It's for allowing the program
uwtitle to put apples, checkmarks, propellers, and diamonds in the title
bars of tty windows.

First, acquire a Macintosh, serial cable, host computer capable of
running 4.3 (or 4.2) BSD UNIX and having a place to plug the Macintosh
into, and the programs uw and uwtitle.  The host computer is liable to
be the most expensive item, but with some tasteful application of
contact paper it can also serve as a useful furniture item in your
apartment.  (For a small apartment I recommend the IBM RT PC as an end
table or perhaps plant stand.)  The host computer may also be useful for
reading news and playing hack.  (Oh, you knew that.)

Once you have all these items, you should be able to connect to the host
using the uw program on the Mac.  Start up the uw server by typing "uw"
when you see the "%" prompt.  Next, find out what your "lnext" character
is by typing:

% stty all
new tty, speed 9600 baud, 24 rows, 80 columns; -tabs 
crt 
erase  kill  werase  rprnt  flush  lnext  susp   intr   quit  stop   eof
^?     ^X    ^W      ^R     ^O     ^V     ^Z/^Y  ^C     ^\    ^S/^Q  ^D

Now lets try some ornamental window titles.  Type in control-V for "^V",
control-T for "^T", etc.

% uwtitle ^V^T^V^S^V^R^V^Q

Isn't that special!
