Thanks for all the replies re: modifying startup screens.

So far all the advice has been to try SuperPaint, which, I'm told,
will do everything I want to do short of washing and waxing my car.
I'll try it.

If anyone has information on other programs that can be used
to modify startup screens, I'd like to hear that too.  Thanks!
