If the file is busy, I think the Finder 'updates' are not done as regularly as you imply. I know that with early releases of MultiFinder and using the downloading capability of VersaTerm in background, file transfers were slowed down by the Finder doing the updates. This was improved a great deal with later releases of MultiFinder. Since I don't use MacTerminal I don't know about the exact problem you mention but overall the performance has been MUCH improved.
