In case anyone is interested, I came up with a simple solution to my 
problem of having a single line field and a button occupy the 'same' 
space.

Each card has multiple fields visually linked by on card lines (similar 
to a flow chart). Over each field, I have placed a transparent button 
that is about the same size as the field but does not overlap approx. 2 
character spaces worth of field on the left side.

End result:
Someone can enter data into each field by moving the browse tool to the 
left end of the field ( where they would naturally tend to start); the 
browse tool then turns to a vertical bar and data can be entered. This 
data, siting mostly under a button is selectable by a text find search. 
Once at that card, additional information on any field can be accessed 
by pressing the transparent button that sits over the greatest part of 
the field. Its like having a searchable button that someone at typing 
level could change the name to or a field that also works as a button.

My original problem was that the browse tool stayed a browse tool over 
the text field because a button was on top of the entire filed (or all 
but the bottom edge of some) preventing me from entering text into the 
field. 

I'm finally have the power to handle the data I bought my Mac for back 
in '84. Gee, this is swell!

PS: has anyone noticed that you can cut and paste buttons to the 
scrapbook AND have the script come with it?
