Summary: Need to test system performance

[This isn't a purely UNIX question, but ...]

We need a means to verify that a machine can support a given number of
users while providing reasonable response time.

I am hoping that some of you will have suggestions as to how we can
simulate the terminal I/O activity of a large number [100+] of concurrent
users. Ideally, the activity would be distinctly non-trivial, such as
word processing, but that may be asking to much.
