I can look up the options for ls in the man pages (if I have to) faster than
I can type the string of commands to sort or whatever (not to mention
figuring out how to use them)

That's not to say that moduler commands don't have their uses.  I use
moduler programs quite a bit.  But in most cases, having switches does no
harm and makes things easier, more useful, and quicker for many people.
(although some people do get carried away with options)
