          Abstract

          We focus on rectangles, the simplest polygons, to present an  in-
          troduction  to computational combinatorial geometry.  We consider
          some of the questions that have been  motivated  by  problems  in
          areas such as:

                    -  computer graphics
                    -  VLSI design
                    -  databases
                    -  numerical control
                    -  architecture
                    -  motion planning
                    -  storage allocation and
                    -  sliding block puzzles ...
