Journal of Man-Machine Studies, Vol. 25, No. 3 (Sept 86), pp. 249-269 This paper covers various techniques that use touch to enter information into a computer. An attempt is made to evaluate and rank them. One aspect that is relevant in comparing touchscreens and mice, is the "coarseness" of the input. A pointer can be positioned fairly accurately with a mouse, but with a touchscreen different choices, say, must be further apart.
