I don't know about the MultiModem 224e but with the Microcom AX-2400C
(The C signifies Class 5), there is a special command to turn on class 5.  The
command is AT%C1.  You can save away this setting in the non-volatile
RAM so that the modem will always try class 5.  There might be something
like this on the MultiModem.  Check your manual.
