I am using a US Robotics 2400, which is generally fine.  However, when there
is noise on the line, in addition to garbage characters, the HS (high speed)
light sometimes goes out, only to return in several seconds.  During the
interval, the modem thinks it is at 1200 baud.  Can this be prevented?
