Basically the problem seems to be that once a disk is fragmented badly enough STABACKIT.EXE can't find enough memory to map it. Fiddling system params doesn't work for anything with runs in standalone mode. The only known method of clearing the problem is to backup the disk online (with the disk write locked to prevent users changing its contents whilst this is happening) then restore it, possibly standalone.
