They are common, because the software is in the public domain, and they seem to have many desirable characteristics, particularly for tinkerers. A bogon is a particle (alias packet) that transmits bogosity. I guess it is also a happy accident that it rhymes with Vogon, because the bogus info is frequently offensive and/or destructive. Gong?
