There is a MUCH better protocol which serves the same function and much more. It's called BOOTP, RFC950. It works on top of UDP and is even capable of working through IP gateways (although they require a "small" modification). Steve Waldbusser here at CMU is almost done with new proms for the Kinetics box which implement BOOTP and TFTP. Unfortunately, the prom also contains the ethernet address, so each box must have a different prom... Drew
