The "Citadel" BBS system has preserved a simple user interface and incorporates
networking.  Minneapolis and St. Paul (Minnesota) have a number of Citadel
boards.  The authors/porters of the PC, ST, and Amiga versions live here and   
a number of machines of all three types network by sharing "rooms" (the Citadel
term for message areas.  All three versions are public domain and are available
in source and object form.
