   I seem remember this happening to me when I first had nethack
on our Ultrix machine. I moved it to my XT, so I can't test this
now for myself, but I think if you have a file called "perm" in
the hack directory, but no file called "safelock" then it should
work, otherwise you get the problem you mentioned. I still have the
support files set up on Ultrix (just no runfile until 2.2 comes out),
and that's what I have that worked, so try it.
