From the viewpoint of a user, this is easy to work around. If you don't want arbitron snooping in on you, just change the name of your .newsrc and set your NEWSRC environment variable. Abitron is hardcoded for .newsrc. Me? Yes, I run arbitron. Why? Because USENET is a team effort. We've all got to cooperate if this thing is going to succeed.
