Yes, the HP paintjet is more than 500 (1295) but well worth the extra
$$$. The canon printers, as "Quadram's" are still available through
the DAK catalogue. You'll need to get a replacement PROM to make them
look like Canon's, as I'm not aware of a Quadram driver, but there are
Canon drivers. (Quadram, in their infinite wisdom, removed the Canon
PROMS and replaced them with their own, *slightly different* command
set. Arrrgh.)

I havn't got a good line on this PROM yet, but several people have told
me about this $6 wonder chip that gives you decent descendors to 
boot.
