I don't have any idea what is happening in the article posted about
someones SHR display going bonkers, but I have had a similar
experience.  Soon after getting my new VGC and ROM upgrade (about a
day after)  I booted up and my display freaked.  First, these
shimmering vertical lines would appear on the right side of the
display.  I cold booted and this time it got worse,  it looked like
every eigth pixel on tthe SHR was shifted over.  Strangely, the
problem dissapeared by itself and has never reappeared since.
