I have seen this problem since getting my UNIXpc way back in May 1985. I ran Release 2.0 in those ancient times. The problem lived on through R 3.0 and I now run Rel 3.5. Evidently it lives in 3.51, but AT&T will not grant we long terms an upgrade (shame on you). I think I recall the problem on a VAX under 4.2BSD, but I'm not sure about that. I have always chaulked it up to an intrinsic problem of VI and avoid joining very long lines. I also avoid typing in the middle of long lines that are supposed to wrap off the 80 column edge of the world for the same reason.
