I have a friend who as an adaptec controler and an seagate st238 for about
a week.  One night his wife was running word perfect when the drive
came back with retry/abort/ignore.  They rebooted the machine and the
drive would not be recognized.  He let it sit over night and was able to 
access it.  I remember a while back that this was a hot topic.  Could
somebody please tell me what is causing the problem and what you would
do it it was your.  The drive and controler are just a couple of weeks
old.  Should he get an RMA and may be get a MINISCRIBE ?
