On page 10 of the GIF standard that Pete Lyall posted here, (BTW, thanks, Pete!), what exactly is the "protocol" parameter supposed to mean? It says that if set, the picture display can take place "within an error correcting protocol". I'm not sure that I understand this. Does this mean that the actual data transfer can occur via some file transfer protocol such as Kermit/XModem/CIS-B? If so, *why* is this network level info buried in the protocol at the application level?? I'm not completely familiar with the ISO 7-layer model, but this seems a little odd. And if it is reasonable, what would be the best way of determining the protocol to be used?
