SuperMac bundles SuperLaserSpool with every drive they ship in order
to increase the differentiation between DataFrames and their
competitors.  The same product, minus the hardware checking, sells
(very well, indeed) through their SuperMac Software division at a
list price of $149.95 for those who do not own DataFrames.  I believe
that they would have preferred you ask" Why are they giving me such a
pricey product free?"
