Unless I misunderstand you, you don't have to do anything special to get the French accented characters. The Frencg department here is using Word 3.01 with problems. To get the accented characters, do the following: character with ^ option-i, then press the character you want accented character with ` option-`, then press the character you want accented character with ' option-e, then press the character you want accented c with , option-c a with o over it option-a (this isn't french) character with " option-u, then press the character you want accented I don't believe there are any others needed for French, but I'm no expert.
