Does HyperCard read MacWrite 4.5 documents?

When I try to read paragraphs using
	open file MWfilename
	read from file MWfilename until return
I get back things that could be paragraphs, except that most of the
characters are "undefined character" quads.  (MacWrite compresses text,
doesn't it?)

Windoid #2 had a Universal Import script which promised to read MacWrite
and Word files, as well as text.  I didn't notice any magic in it.

What obvious point have I managed to overlook?
