I've always been under the impression that the ~$50K figure should really be around ~$3K, and that it isn't due purely to marketing considerations. For people with small pocketbooks that are interested in previewing animation quickly (that rules out film...), I'd suggest a cheap black-and-white single frame VCR. I used one in an animation class here at UCLA 4 years ago, and it was perfect.
