One of the Bell Labs research UNIX's had a /proc file system.  Entries
in /proc were by process id and you could debug various processes by
opening them up (looks at their memory) and presumably control them
by issuing ioctl's.  I've never seen this in a version of UNIX that
has seen the light of day.
