I was very deliberate in mentioning "FM".  Or I could have used micro-wave,
or IR communications equipment as my example.  I recall that ionosphere does
not reflect EM radiation of frequencies that high.

The "curving" due to refraction?  Come on, Bret, look up (or measure!) 
the index of refraction of light in air and calculate the distances needed
to achieve the "bending" you are requiring.  Trust me, I had driven to San
Francisco and back -- it's not THAT far.
