Our problem is that we have a large graph (ie. a set of 1000 or more nodes and arcs connecting them) that represents components of a large software system and their interdependencies. We want a programmer to be able to call up a screen display of the graph centered at some node of interest and then "browse" through it. The general problem is how to design a convenient natural interface for viewing such a graph. The detailed problems include screen layout (to minimize crossing lines and superimposed nodes), and the mechanics of scrolling, zooming, printing, etc. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
