  I run the "software tools mailer" written in "C", and in the public domain.
  It includes support for various network interfaces, but also works just fine
  as a DECnet store-and-forward mailer.  We use it to gateway our machine
  between SPAN and the Internet.
  
  Ken Adelman at LBL converted it to "C" and now maintains it.  It is very
  good.  Has some documentation.  Comes with source, and available as a
  VMSINSTALable backup save set.
