If you get 'device full' errors because a .DIR. file cannot be extended, the
 disk must be very badly fragmented ( or is full ! ) and a clean-up is
 long overdue. There are a few things you can do to keep things running for
 a while e.g. PURGE / DELETE unnecessary files / have small directories, but the
 sooner a BACKUP/RESTORE operation ( or a session with one of the
 defragmentation packages ) is performed the better for your system performance.
