Features we need are: Runnable interactively as opposed to standalone, (almost never happens here) smart enough to know which files are to be kept permanently, which can be purged after a time, which are to be ignored, with some smarts about compressing archive tapes containing expired files, won't break with new versions of VMS, or with solid support. Low priced or PD would be nice! If you know of such an animal, are using something similar now, we would appreciate hearing from you. I seem to recall this was discussed a long while back (before I cared about archivers :() so if you deem this a non-networthy topic please reply directly to me and I can post a summary.
