Several requests for help in the use and compilation of compress
v 4.0 on Xenix systems have been posted to the net.

The discussion suggests that it may not be recognized that Xenix 
patches for compress had been posted long ago, and can be ftp'd 
or whatever from comp.sources archive sites:

The Xenix patches take into account the Intel 80286 segmented 
architecture, either explicitly or by letting the compiler do it.
16-bit compress appears to be ok.

These patches do not work for Microport SysV/AT, which lacks the huge
model.  Microport patches have been posted to comp.unix.microport,
again for the 16-bit case.  If the Xenix patches don't work for you,
why not try the Microport patches?  These certainly should give you
16-bit compress.
