Work with subdirectories. The Unix arc I can't even get to create an archive in a different directory (eg arc a ../foo *) or unarc from a different one. Also Unix arc will gladly remove your files when you use the "m" option even if it can't create the archive (because you don't have write permission on the directory) or can't read the file (a problem sometimes when uudecoded files create binaries with odd protections and you don't notice).
