I recently bought a SUPRA 2400 baud modem. It seems to work just fine.
I cannot comment on reliability, because of my limited experience with
it.  I can say however that 2400 baud makes working remotely possible, where
1200 did not.  It is possible to do full-screen editing and remain sane.

There are a number of possible reasons that the SUPRA modem is inexpensive.
It is not in a fancy box, there aren't lots of pretty lights and nobs.
It does not, at least the package I bought, come with communication
software.
