From what I understand, the recommended solution is to split
your mail files into chunks less than 60K rather than hack your
mail system.  There are *LOTS* of mailers out there that will
choke on large files, I had always thought the limit was 60K.
That way when your users send mail off of your system, or start
working elsewhere they aren't surprised when their mail doesn't
get through uncorrupted.

This is why you see all those "part X of NN" postings in the
sources newsgroups.
