I just got my copy of the new Mac book "Technical Introduction to the 
Macintosh Family" direct from Addison-Wesley and it is GREAT!  You know a
book is current, when the cover shows a Mac II.
 
It goes into h/w differences, ROM versions/IDs, things found in diff ROMS
Special H/W features of Mac II (It has a MIDI Manager!!!), a long chapter
on Apple A/UX.  How fonts (even color fonts!) work and how quickdraw is
done internally as well as the toolbox interface.  It is a great comparasion
of the machines.  Well worth $19.
 
PS.  It is an Apple book published by Addison Wesley (Publishers of IM V1-5)
